New Indiana law increases I-465 speed limit starting in July

MARION COUNTY, Ind. — Starting next month, drivers will legally be able to drive a little faster on I-465.

According to a news release from the Indiana Department of Transportation, the speed limit on the majority of I-465 in Indianapolis will increase from 55 to 65 mph. This comes after House Bill 1461 was passed and signed into law during the 2025 legislative session.

House Bill 1461, a road funding-centered bill, was authored by Indiana State Rep. Jim Pressel, a Republican from northern Indiana. The bill, signed into law by Indiana Gov. Mike Braun on May 1, also includes provisions surrounding updates to roads and infrastructure throughout the state.

Officials with INDOT said that new speed limit signs will be installed around the majority of the I-465 loop starting on or after July 1. The release said that minimal traffic impacts are expected during the installation of the new signs.

According to the release, the speed limit will remain 55 mph between 86th Street and 96th Street on the northwest side of Indianapolis “due to existing roadway design.” Officials said that the work zone speed limits will continue in the upcoming Level Up 31 and the ongoing Clear Path I-465/I-69 work zones on the north portion of I-465.

On the southeast portion of I-465, INDOT said that variable speed limits will remain in place between I-70 and I-65. The maximum speed limit will be 65 mph, but the limit will increase or decrease by five miles per hour based on travel conditions.

The release said that the speed limits will increase “once the signs are installed.” Officials said that installation is expected to take around a week in early July, weather permitting.
