Amtrak introduces new ‘Mardi Gras Service’ between New Orleans, Alabama

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Amtrak has a new service making for a more convenient trip for riders.

Starting Aug.18, customers will now have an option to hop on the new Amtrak Mardi Gras Service. This is a new, twice-daily intercity train service traveling between Mobile, Alabama and New Orleans.

Amtrak officials said the service will offer a “convenient” morning and evening departure from both cities.

Amtrak President Roger Harris says guests can plan travel for football trips in the fall and holiday travel for November, December and Mardi Gras.

“We encourage customers to get their tickets now to experience this new, comfortable, and scenic service, and have the first opportunity to travel by train on the Mississippi Gulf Coast in nearly 20 years,” said Harris.

Amtrak officials said end-to-end adult fares start at $15 each way and that discounts are available for children 2-12 years old, seniors, veterans, military, families, small groups, large groups and others.

“Mobilians have looked forward to the return of passenger rail for years, and the Amtrak Mardi Gras Service promises to deliver not just convenience, but connection,” said Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson.

The rides will consist of coach and business classes along with café services featuring locally sourced items. It will also feature wide reclining seats, WIFI and “generous carry-on baggage allowances.”

“Amtrak Mardi Gras Service reconnects New Orleans to its Gulf Coast neighbors in Mississippi and Alabama, bringing benefits to our residents, businesses, and visitors and furthering anchoring New Orleans as the premier passenger rail hub in the South,” said New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell.
