FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE)- A man fleeing the scene of a hit-and-run moments before died after crashing into a tree in downtown Fresno, Fresno police say.
Officers were called to the area near Fresno and “H” Streets around 10:30 a.m. Sunday, for a report of a crashed pickup.
During the investigation, they say another driver told them the driver of the pickup had rear-ended his black Subaru about a mile away.
According to police, the driver of the Subaru also told them that when the first collision occurred at “P” and Divisidero Streets, he got out of his SUV and went to approach the driver of the silver Chevy S10 so information could be exchanged.
Instead of staying at the scene, the victim told officers, the driver of the pickup sped away at what he estimates to be speeds of over 100 mph, while he followed to keep him in sight and call police.
Investigators say that’s when the pickup’s male driver lost control of the truck and crashed into a tree. That driver died at the scene.
Police say the Subaru’s driver and his passenger had only complaints of pain from the first collision.
The name of the pickup’s driver has yet to be released pending next of kin notification.
