Lower storm chances for the upcoming week; Tracking two areas in the tropics

LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) – After showers and thunderstorms brought rain-cooled air to Acadiana this afternoon, temperatures will be warming up in the days ahead. Tonight, temperatures settle in the 70s with a few clouds.

Monday will start out with high humidity and lots of sunshine. Temperatures warm quickly and will reach the lower 90s during the afternoon. A few storms will develop to bring some cooling relief to the area.

We are monitoring two areas of interest in the tropics. The first is Tropical Storm Barry which strengthened a bit this afternoon. It has winds of 45 mph and could strengthen slightly before landfall in Mexico later tonight. It will mainly be a rainmaker for coastal Mexican towns.

We’re also monitoring the potential for low pressure to form up in the eastern Gulf or off the Southeast coast by next weekend. Tropical development potential is low, but some modeling suggests we could see something try to spin up later this week, similar to Hurricane Barry back in 2019. For now, continue to monitor the forecast and stay tuned to KLFY for more details in the day ahead.

Locally, we will see a fairly dry week ahead with only a few storms developing each afternoon to help break the heat. Temperatures will reach the mid 90s in many spots. Towards the end of the week into next weekend, rain chances may increase depending on what occurs with the stalled front in the Gulf. As things stand now, be ready for a very hot and humid July 4th with only a few storms around. Make sure to drink plenty of water and wear sunscreen!
