Tree removed from Mount Vernon Memorial Highway in Fairfax County

FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. (DC News Now) — Fairfax County police officers blocked off part of Mount Vernon Memorial Highway Friday for several hours after a large tree fell onto the road.

The Fairfax County Police Department posted on X around 4:30 a.m. on Friday that the highway was shut down in both directions near Southwood Drive.

Police said crews are responding to the scene to remove the tree.

In an update more than five hours later, police announced the all lanes had reopened on Mount Vernon Memorial Highway.

It is unclear exactly when the tree fell; however, several trees came down across the DMV during storms on Thursday evening.

In Montgomery County, families were displaced after multiple trees toppled over and damaged their homes and some cars. Strong winds from the storm left debris scattered across the road.
