Lawmakers warn of potential loss of SNAP benefits for Pennsylvanians

(WHTM) — Hundreds of thousands of Pennsylvanians are at risk of losing SNAP benefits.

That’s because President Donald Trump’s so-called “big, beautiful bill” comes with cuts to the food assistance program through work requirements for adults 55 to 64 years old. In Pennsylvania, opposition to the cuts have become an apolitical issue for many.

“It’s about making sure our neighbors can eat, and that’s something I think we can all agree on,” said Scott Karns, chairman of Karns Quality Foods. “We need to help our families. We need to help those who need help, and letting them buy what they want and get good nutritious food from fresh produce, fresh meat, dairy products is really important.”

It’s an unusually partisan statement from a grocer, but those who spoke Friday at a press conference inside the store said the cuts are serious. Attendees included PA Secretary of Agriculture Russ Redding and State Rep. Nate Davidson (D-Cumberland).

Davidson pointed out the produce sold at Karns is locally grown. Its corn, he said, comes from Cumberland County.

But if the GOP-controlled U.S. Senate doesn’t restore the SNAP cuts passed by the GOP-controlled U.S. House, Davidson said the loss will also be very local.

It’ll mean “more children who go to school hungry,” Davidson said. “It means our senior citizens forced to choose between life-saving medication or a healthy meal. It means parents sacrificing their own nutrition to ensure their children don’t go hungry.”

House Republicans, meanwhile, say it’s Democrats blocking sensible ideas.

“I had an amendment to make sure that, guarantee that we were verifying the status that the people receiving SNAP benefits were U.S. citizens,” said State Rep. Jamie Walsh (R-Luzerne), “and the Democrats, all 102 of them, decided to table my amendment.”

The U.S. Senate parliamentarian, who enforces Senate rules, blocked some of the proposed SNAP cuts. Senators tweaked them, and the parliamentarian approved the new version.

With a 53-seat majority in the Senate, Republicans can only afford three GOP defections on the bill without support from Democrats.
