Outdoor ‘hidden gem’ near Baton Rouge offers kayaking, swimming, camping

BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — People who love a nature getaway can visit a new place in East Feliciana Parish where they can swim, kayak or camp.

A grand opening for The Point: Camping & Kayaking, at 19099 Highway 10 in Clinton, is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. July 4. The site sits on 17 acres, including 1/3 mile of beach on the Amite River.

On Independence Day, guests can check in at The Gathering Point Event Camp and will then be directed to where to park. People can enjoy the beach for free on that day. Dogs will not be allowed due to crowds expected for the grand opening.

Along with free beach access on the Fourth of July, guests can enjoy free short kayak demos, discounted kayak trips for $20 if you book ahead of time and a few giveaways for discounted cabin stays and kayak trips. There will also be a rock hunt game with small prizes.

Guests are asked not to bring any glass or Styrofoam containers on the river. ATVs and driving are not allowed on the beach.

Owners Misty and Chris Davis said walkups are welcome for the kayak trips.

What to know about kayaking at The Point

The trip downriver can take an estimated two to four hours, depending on your speed. Single and tandem/double kayak options are offered. Guests can bring their own kayaks, but the owners ask that those individuals arrive an hour early.

Kayakers will be shuttled five miles upriver to a private launch point and float back to The Point from there. Shuttle hours are 9:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Guests are asked to arrive 45 minutes early. Kayak trips are available outside of those times upon request.

If you go kayaking, lifejackets and paddles will be provided, but the owners suggest bringing a dry bag with you for items. Kayaks must be returned before dark.

After the grand opening, beach access and kayaking will be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Click here to book your kayak trip or send a message via their Facebook page.

Need a nature-filled getaway? Book a camp or cabin

“We’re both from Louisiana and saw an opportunity to create a peaceful, family-friendly space where people could enjoy the beauty of the Amite River. This stretch of river is a hidden gem—clean, quiet, and perfect for relaxing, paddling, or just spending the day on the beach,” the owners said.

Water and packaged snacks will be available, but people should bring a picnic lunch, chairs, fishing gear and something for shade. Guests can also bring a small ice chest and a grill for use on the beach. Staff can assist guests with bringing items onto the beach if needed.

For an overnight stay, there are currently three cabins available to rent and access to primitive tent camping near the river. A community shower and bathroom will be available for primitive campers, while the cabins will have private bathrooms and showers.

Contact the owners directly if you want to stay in one of those cabins or an outdoor camp.

Event space rentals are available for 30 or 40 people at the Gathering Point Camp. If you are interested in booking that camp, send a request to book on The Pilot website and someone will reach out for booking.

Costs:

  • Kayak trips: $25 per person
  • Beach day access: $8 per person
  • Cabins: Starting at $85 per night
  • Event space rental: Starting at $200
  • Primitive camping: $15 per person per night
