FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. (DC News Now) — Months after a tanker truck crashed in Great Falls, causing thousands of gallons of gas to spill into Difficult Run, officials announced that the road has reopened with new signage.
On the morning of April 3, the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department was called to the bridge over Difficult Run after a tanker truck crashed and began leaking gas into the stream. The stream is a tributary of the Potomac River.
The Interstate Commission on the Potomac River Basin said over 2,500 gallons of fuel may have leaked.
The crash also left part of the bridge damaged, and the smell of gas reeked throughout the community.
The hazmat incident resulted in several roads, including Leigh Mill Road, being shut down as crews worked to clean up the gas.
In an update on June 25, officials announced that Leigh Mill Road has officially reopened after months of cleaning the stream.
Following the incident, the bridge over Difficult Run now has a length restriction, stating that no vehicles over 40 feet are allowed to cross.
Officials warned that new signs were posted leading up to Leigh Mill Road and the bridge.
