Construction crews in Bowie braving the heat to build new homes

BOWIE, Md. (DC News Now) — It was another scorching hot day in the DMV as many battled it out, braving the hot temperatures.

This includes construction worker Jennifer Medarmo and many others in her crew, who are building a townhouse community in Bowie.

“We are drinking lots of water and eating good food and lots of it, and eat fruit constantly and drink Gatorade during the long hours out here, so you can be strong so you can work in construction,” said Medarmo

Down the street, the Willy family spent Wednesday afternoon sweating it out and lifting heavy boxes. The family unloaded a moving truck carrying all their belongings for their new home. Dennis Willy said the humid conditions made the job difficult.

“I don’t think we could have any hotter day to be moving too our new home in the summer and I did this a few summers ago when it was really hot and we stay cool by taking frequent breaks and drinking lots of water and we make sure we are eating things here and there because,” shared Willy.

Whether you had to carry heavy boxes or spend the day outside in the bright sunshine building houses, everyone agrees, including Medarmo, that you have to be cautious to stay safe in the dangerous heat.

“For us as working outside is really hard, we drink lots of electrolytes and lots of water, and we take breaks often for 15 and 20 minutes and break for an hour or two hours,” added Medarmo.

Thursday’s forecast calls for another hot, humid day in the DMV, but construction crews in Bowie said they are up for the challenge and vow to stay hydrated to get the work done.
