MEBANE, N.C. (WGHP) — An apartment fire that took place in Mebane early Friday morning has left 21 people displaced and resulted in the death of a pet, according to the Mebane Fire Department.
At around 2:00 a.m. on Friday, firefighters came to the Stonebrook Apartments in Mebane after getting a report of a fire.
At the scene, firefighters found flames through the roof of two upstairs apartments and fire coming out into the roof of the rear units.
It took around 40 minutes to get the fire under control and firefighters stayed on the scene for another three hours to clean up hot spots.
Eight apartment units were affected by the blaze, with the two upstairs apartments suffering significant fire damage and the other six with varying degrees of damage from fire, smoke and water.
15 adults and 6 juveniles are displaced from their homes as a result of the fire, according to the fire department. A family pet was killed in the fire.
The Red Cross is working to find temporary housing for those displaced. Stonerbook has arranged for temporary housing in the interim.
Firefighters suspect that the cause of the fire was accidental. However, it still remains under investigation.
The estimated loss is expected to be over $1 million.
