Walmart to lay off hundreds of Sunnyvale employees months after opening office space

(KRON) — Retail giant Walmart opened a new state-of-the-art office space in Silicon Valley in April. Less than three months later, hundreds of employees are being laid off at an older, second Sunnyvale location.

According to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) report, Walmart is laying off 381 employees from its 640, 680, 840 and 860 W. California Avenue offices in Sunnyvale.

The recently opened office is about three miles away at 1375 Crossman Ave. The WARN report did not list any layoffs for employees working in that office.

The report was filed on June 18, and the layoffs go into effect on Aug. 22, according to the WARN report.

This latest round of layoffs is part of the job cuts the company informed employees about last month, according to a Walmart spokesperson. Walmart informed its office-based employees via a May letter (attached below) that jobs were set to be cut. The letter, which was sent to workers on May 21, did not specify how many employees or which offices would be affected by these layoffs.

Walmart planned to house about 2,000 employees at the Crossman Avenue office in Sunnyvale. It is unclear how many employees are currently working out of that office.

Earlier this month, KRON4 reported that 106 Walmart employees from its San Bruno office would be laid off. The San Bruno location is an eCommerce Corporate facility. Those layoffs will also take effect on Aug. 22.

Other major companies that have offices in Sunnyvale include LinkedIn (headquarters), Google and Meta. Walmart was founded and is currently headquartered in Arkansas.
