CHARLESTON, S.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Around midday on Thursday, people across the Southeast reported seeing a bright fireball streak across the sky.

The National Weather Service in Charleston said satellite lightning detectors picked up a streak of light over Gasburg, Virginia, near the NC-VA border, but there were no storms in the area.

The flash occurred between 11:51 a.m. and 11:56 a.m. Thursday, June 26. Experts believe it was likely a meteor, also known as a “fireball,” which burns brightly in the atmosphere.

The clear skies and eyewitness reports make a strong case for a rare daytime meteor sighting.
