CHARLOTTE (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Big news for Charlotte’s animal lovers! The city is moving forward with plans for a brand-new Animal Care and Control adoption facility, which will provide much-needed space and services for pets in need of a ‘furever’ home.
On Monday, the Charlotte City Council approved a nearly $1.53 million contract with Albion General Contractors, Inc. to begin designing the new facility.
The project is being delivered through what’s called a “progressive design-build” method, which means the design and construction teams will work closely together from the start.
This first contract covers the design phase only.
The future adoption center will be located at 5400 South Tryon Street, in Council District 3, and was approved as part of the Fiscal Year 2026 budget. With Charlotte’s growing population and increasing demand for animal services, city leaders said this new facility is crucial.
The current contract focuses on the design phase of the project. Once the design is complete, the city will negotiate a second agreement with Albion for the construction phase.
The project is funded through the city’s General Capital Investment Plan.
