Charlotte moves forward with 911 call center expansion at CMPD headquarters

CHARLOTTE (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Changes are coming to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s 911 Call Center. This week, city leaders approved a nearly $2 million contract to renovate and expand the facility located at 601 East Trade Street.

City officials said the $1,997,003 contract was awarded to Batson-Cook Company, the lowest bidder out of three companies that submitted proposals.

The project is part of the city’s ongoing effort to modernize public safety infrastructure and keep pace with Charlotte’s growing population and the increasing number of 911 calls.

The expansion will upgrade the current 911 operations hub inside CMPD headquarters. Planned improvements include:

  • New interior finishes
  • Updated operator consoles
  • Major upgrades to critical systems like HVAC, electrical, and uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems

City officials said these improvements are designed to increase the number of 911 telecommunications in the center, helping the city respond more quickly during emergencies.

Charlotte Business INClusion set a goal that at least 12% of the project budget should go to Minority, Women, and Small Business Enterprises. Batson-Cook significantly exceeded that, committing over 36%, more than $720,000, to TEC Electrical LLC, a certified minority and small business firm. TEC will handle the electrical and fire alarm work for the expansion, officials said.

Construction is expected to begin later this year, with completion scheduled for the first quarter of 2027. Funding for the project is coming from the city’s General Capital Investment Plan.
