MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) — Montgomery County has become the first local government in Maryland to receive the SolSmart Platinum designation, the highest level awarded for promoting affordable solar energy.
The national SolSmart program, funded by the U.S. Department of Energy, recognizes local efforts to streamline solar permitting and expand access to clean energy. Montgomery County earned the top honor by launching its eSolar program, training staff on solar best practices, and increasing transparency through a new solar dashboard.
County Executive Marc Elrich said the designation shows that efforts to remove barriers and speed up rooftop solar installations are paying off.
More than 500 cities and counties across the country have earned SolSmart designations since the program began in 2016.
