YOUNGSVILLE, La. (KLFY) — A family of four is stuck without their home after it flooded with three to four inches of water in April.
“It’s very stressful. We’re having to live with family members because, of course, flood insurance doesn’t cover any housing expenses. So, we have to stay with family and have to drive back and forth. It’s beginning to be a lot. School starts in August, and I’m just really wanting us to be able to be in the home and be comfortable where the kids can start off the school year in their own home,” said Irene Sinegal.
She said they were sleeping around 5:40 a.m., and because their dog was barking her husband got up. When he got up to go see what the dog was barking for, he stepped out of the bed and the water was already in the hall.
“We just waited until the rain slackened off and once the water came out of the house, which took a little while, we started to move things out and I got a storage and just put what we could save in storage and it was just a waiting process from there,” she explained.
A claim was filed and Sinegal says they are expecting $71,690.84 in building property and $26,510.77 in personal property.
“It’s been three weeks, and we still haven’t received anything,” she said. “It’s nothing like being in your own home like I said, my kids have their rooms over here. They have to share a room now. It’s just that it’s taken a toll. It’s very stressful and frustrating. You think you pay insurance, and you’re covered and still nothing is being done.”
News 10 reached out to FEMA about the family’s case status and was informed they are looking into it and will provide updates when they can.
