BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — A recruiting text message claiming to offer a lucrative part-time remote job with retail giant Target is likely a scam.
We also received the message today.
The message, which has circulated via text and social media, states: “Hi, I’m a recruiter at TARGET, my name is Maya. Your background and resume have been recommended by multiple online recruitment agencies…” The message goes on to promise flexible online work requiring only 60 to 90 minutes a day, four days a week, with earnings between $250 and $500 per day—or $1,000 every four days.
Recipients are then encouraged to text a phone number—213-881-xxxx—for more information, with the note that “applicants must be at least 28 years old and responsible.”
However, several red flags suggest the message is part of a common employment scam scheme.
Scammers often impersonate large companies, such as Target, because it lends their pitch a false sense of legitimacy. But promises of extremely high pay for minimal work, vague job duties, and a request to respond by text to a random phone number are all classic warning signs.
Target does not recruit employees via unsolicited text messages, and job seekers should apply through their official careers website at https://corporate.target.com/careers.
Victims of employment scams often report being asked to provide sensitive personal information or pay upfront fees for “training materials,” only to find themselves defrauded with no job offer in sight.
Anyone who receives similar messages is advised not to respond, and to report the message to the Federal Trade Commission at reportfraud.ftc.gov.
