NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — The Jones Academy for Girls school in Treme is but one of the state’s institutions working to help students attend next year in light of how state funding is now being distributed.

According to Dr. Toi Thornton, “It is a unique school, one of a kind here in the area, specifically for young girls. We are grooming young leaders here at the Jones Academy. Our endeavor is to not only enrich them when it comes to education but also give them life skills as they grow up and become young girls.”

The kids are currently attending an enrichment summer camp, but the recent decision by the state legislature to on partially fund the LA Gator program has put the attendance of some of these girls in jeopardy.

Thornton says, “Many of our students that go here may not have the means to pay, to send their students to a private school and so, scholarships and scholarship money through the state as well as private donors has been supportive since we began to help some of these students attend this school.”

The administration is working so that those students are not left out. In fact, this week is a fundraising week, highlighted by a student-led JAG NOLA Color Run.

“We want people to be able to support each young lady. Each of them has their own website that they’ve been able to give their families to try and raise money on their own and people are able to donate or sponsor a mile or so as they run,” Thorton.
