
BURKE COUNTY, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A man has been charged after a three-year-old child accidentally shot themself with an unsecured firearm, according to the Burke County Sheriff’s Office.
On June 22, deputies responded to 1675 Berrytown Avenue in Morganton about a child suffering from a gunshot wound. When they arrived, they treated the three-year-old for the gunshot wound to their foot and later transported them to a local hospital by helicopter.
Investigators believe the incident occurred while children were left unsupervised in a home with a firearm that was not properly secured, officials said.
On June 23, warrants were issued for the homeowner, 57-year-old Danny Berry. He turned himself in and was charged with felony possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and misdemeanor failure to secure a firearm in the protection of a minor.
Berry was booked under a $40,000 unsecured bond.
