Update: Around 8:30 pm, emergency workers found two bodies within the debris.

According to a press release from the Emporia Police Department, the explosion appears to be accidental. The exact cause of the explosion is under investigation by the Emporia Fire Department with assistance from the State Fire Marshal’s Office and the Emporia Police Department.

EMPORIA (KSNT) — Emergency responders are on the scene of a residential explosion that took place in Emporia Wednesday.

According to a spokeswoman with the City of Emporia, just before 5 p.m., the Emporia Fire Department was dispatched to the area of East 6th Avenue and Weaver Street on reports of an explosion. Upon arrival, fire crews found a collapsed structure on fire.

The fire was contained to the structure involved.
