CHICAGO — Pride Fest is upon us once again and this year, it coincided with the area’s first heat wave of the season. Despite the hot weather, thousands flocked to Northalsted.
“In Chicago, it’s a new level of creativity and community,” Peter, an attendee, said. “Everyone is into their outfits, the performances are amazing. It’s just so much fun.
The landmark LGBTQ+ Northalsted neighborhood is even more colorful than usual this weekend with crowds coming to Pride Fest.
“I’m here to celebrate Pride, to be able to be my full authentic self. It’s so fun to be in this environment where everyone is accepting,” Peter said.
Peter made his way from Michigan for the 24th annual event, which is a vibrant celebration of LGBTQ+ life, culture and community.
“It’s a great time. Bring kids, partners — it’s great for everybody and we need it now in this political climate,” Michael Stamps said.
Stamps says this year’s Pride Fest feels particularly important.
“Right now, we are having rights taken from us. We need to band together as a community and that’s what we always do for Pride,” Stamps said.
Everyone who showed up enjoyed good food and souvenirs while doing everything necessary to stay cool in these high temperatures.

The festival offered some of the finest exhibitions, guest speakers and more than 150 vendors. There was something for everyone.
“Happy Pride, have fun, stay safe and cool out here,” Aviles said.
Pride Fest runs until 10 p.m. on Sunday. There is a $20 suggested donation for entry.
