Illinois Department of Transportation warns extreme heat could cause road pavement failures

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WTVO) — The Illinois Department of Transportation is warning motorists that extreme heat could cause road pavement to buckle and crack, leading to potentially hazardous situations.

According to IDOT, “Pavement failures or blowouts occur when prolonged high temperatures cause the road to expand and buckle up or blow out, resulting in uneven driving surfaces. Precipitation and humidity increase the potential for buckling. “

A drive in Missouri on Sunday caught video of pavement buckling just as a passenger car approaches, launching the car in the air.

“The road exploded and rose over 18 inches, sending a car airborne,” Albert Blackwell, who took the video, said.

IDOT said motorists should remain alert and anticipate slowdowns and temporary work zones while traveling.
