Louisiana lawmakers react to US airstrikes on Iran

BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — Louisiana lawmakers are speaking out after U.S. airstrikes targeted Iranian nuclear facilities on Saturday. The strikes, ordered by President Donald Trump, have drawn both praise and criticism from members of the state’s congressional delegation.

Gov. Jeff Landry said Trump was one of the greatest presidents.

Congresswoman Julia Letlow (LA-5) issued a statement in support of the operation:

“President Trump’s decisive action protects America’s security and is a key step toward halting Iran’s march toward becoming a nuclear power. I’m grateful to our troops for their bravery in successfully executing this mission.

Military action should never be taken lightly, but the world’s leading sponsor of terrorism obtaining a nuclear weapon would fundamentally threaten our national security. These targeted strikes were the right call, and I pray for the continued protection of our men and women in uniform.”

Congressman Wesley Fields, also from Louisiana, said America couldn’t afford another conflict.

“I have been consistent in my belief that America should not be entangled in the Iran-Israel conflict. The recent news of U.S. air strikes only deepens our involvement in a war that does not serve the best interests of the American people. Our priority should be diplomacy and de-escalation. We must focus on the pressing needs of our citizens here at home. We cannot afford to be drawn into yet another endless conflict.”

Congressman Tory A. Carter, Sr. (D-LA) questioned the legality of the strikes. He also criticized the president’s approach.

“Once again, we find ourselves on the brink of war—launched not by Congressional consensus, but by executive proclamation. President Trump’s unilateral strikes on Iranian nuclear sites—no matter how provocative the target—constitute a clear violation of Article I, Section 8 of the United States Constitution, which gives Congress—not the President—the sole authority to declare war.

Let me be clear: I strongly oppose Iran’s pursuit of nuclear weapons. The international community must remain vigilant and united in preventing nuclear proliferation. But even in moments of great tension, we cannot abandon the bedrock principles of our democracy.

Launching military attacks without Congressional authorization not only endangers global stability—it undermines the very Constitution we are sworn to uphold. We cannot preserve peace abroad while shredding our founding document at home.

Now is the time for measured diplomacy, not impulsive escalation. We must demand answers. We must restore balance. And we must recommit to the rule of law—even when it’s inconvenient.

The American people deserve transparency, accountability, and leadership that honors both our national security and our democratic values.”
