Oregon high schoolers set new record at New Balance Nationals

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Crater High School star runner Tayvon Kitchen and his relay teammates Preston Schmidt, Maxwell Miracle and Josiah Tostenson set the meet record in the 4×4 mile race at the New Balance Nationals on Thursday night.

Their time of 16 minutes, 54.80 seconds is No. 2 all-time in U.S. High school outdoor history. This team has now swept both the outdoor and indoor 4×4 mile relay national titles.

Kitchen already holds the fastest time run by a high schooler ever in the 3000 meters which he set this year at the state meet. The BYU commit became the first high schooler from Oregon to break eight minutes. He was named the 2023-24 Gatorade Oregon Boys Cross Country Athlete of the Year and led Crater High School to four straight cross country state team titles during his career.

His teammate Tostenson holds the state record in the 1,500 meters and was the first Oregon high schooler to run a sub-four-minute mile at the HOKA Festival of Miles in early June. The Washington commit has won five Oregon state titles including the 1,500-meter three times, the 3,000 last year, and the 800.

Miracle is an 800/1500-meter specialist who won both races at the USATF Oregon Association Junior Olympic Championships last year. The sophomore took fourth in the 800m at the 2025 OSAA State Championship, followed up by Schmidt who took seventh.
