BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — Louisiana’s attorney general warns people of the rise in online casino games operating illegally in the state, as over 40 cease and desist letters have been issued to operators.

AG Liz Murrill said some illegal gambling websites and mobile apps offering real money are illegal and targeting residents. She explains that some websites appear as legitimate sweepstakes, like those from companies such as McDonald’s or Starbucks, but are not.

“I want to make it unequivocally clear that online casino, bingo, keno, iGaming, and alleged sweepstakes or social gaming sites offering such games are operating illegally in Louisiana. I will enforce our laws and hold those offering illegal gambling websites accountable through all legal means,” said Murrill.

Gov. Jeff Landry vetoed a bill on June 12 that aimed to criminalize illegal online gambling, deeming it unnecessary. According to Landry, the Louisiana Gaming Control Board (LGCB) is already taking steps to fight it, specifically combating illegal offshore wagering and illegal online sweepstakes companies.

“The Board and its regulatory partners will take further action as deemed necessary to enforce state gaming laws, protect patrons and bettors, and maintain the integrity of Louisiana’s gaming industry,” Landry wrote in a veto message.
