NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Juneteenth is our nation’s holiday that celebrates when all citizens were free. Juneteenth is a federal holiday that commemorates when the enslaved in Galveston, Texas were freed, June 19, 1865.
This event happened over two years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. In this WGNO special report of Moving New Orleans Forward, we explore the concept of freedom through the stories of real people.
There are three colors in the Pan-African flag that was created in 1920. The color black represents the diasporic people of Africa. The color green represents the vibrant natural resources of the continent and the promise of a fertile and prosperous future. The color red represents liberation, equality and the blood shed for freedom.
Celebrate the freedom of Juneteenth through the color red with LBJ and Christopher Leach by watching our WGNO special report.
The WGNO Juneteenth special airs on WGNO at 6:30 p.m. and on NOLA38 at 9 p.m. on Thursday, June 19.
