(KRON) — A 18-year-old unhoused man is suspected of seriously injuring an unhoused man from Santa Rosa in a wheelchair at a bus stop with a hammer and pocketknife, said the Santa Rosa Police Department.
The assault happened on Tuesday at 3:57 p.m. in the area of S. Wright Road and Finley Avenue. Santa Rosa PD said the victim suffered significant injures with “multiple lacerations, contusions, and at least one puncture wound to his arms and one leg.”
The suspect fled the scene before police arrived, but witnesses provided a description of the man who was located walking nearby, said SRPD. Police said the alleged weapons used in the assault were found on the suspect, identified as 18-year-old Ricky Carver of Santa Rosa, when he was detained.
“Officers learned the victim was sitting in his wheelchair near the bus stop when another man aggressively approached him and pushed over his wheelchair unprovoked,” said SRPD. “The suspect then produced a hammer from his waistband and began violently hitting the victim on his arm. The suspect then used a pocketknife to slash the victim.”
Police believe that Carver also used a hammer to threaten employees at downtown retail store earlier in the day when he tried to bring back items that he allegedly stole.
Carter was arrested and booked into Sonoma County Jail where he faces a charge for assault with a deadly weapon. Police said a judge increased Carter’s bail by $200,000 due to the suspected unprovoked assault and alleged store hammer incident.
