CHICAGO (WGN) – A Chicago man has been arrested for driving under the influence and a weapons offense after crashing into an Illinois Department of Transportation truck on the Dan Ryan Expressway.
The Illinois State Police said just before 2:30 p.m. Sunday, June 15, officers were sent to I-94 southbound at 83rd Street in Chicago to investigate a crash.
Upon further investigation, it was determined an IDOT truck had its emergency lights and sirens activated and was preparing to stop for a disabled vehicle on the left shoulder. As the IDOT truck slowed down in the left lane, a Hyundai Sonata – driven by 29-year-old Edward Gilbert – rear-ended the IDOT truck, according to investigators.
ISP said Gilbert and his 24-year-old female passenger were taken to area hospitals with serious injuries. The driver of the IDOT truck was not injured.
Authorities added a loaded gun was found inside the Hyundai.
On Wednesday, June 18, Gilbert was charged with aggravated driving under the influence – accident causing great bodily harm and felon in possession of a weapon.
He remains in custody ahead of an initial court hearing that has yet to be scheduled.
