(KRON) — The California Highway Patrol Oakland Area office said an officer quickly responded to the scene after being alerted of an injured pelican on Interstate 880.
The bird was discovered Monday on northbound I-880, just north of 66th Avenue.
CHP said the pelican is currently in the care of International Bird Rescue’s wildlife clinic who will help heal then release the large waterbird.
“Thanks to quick action of the public for calling and the responding officer, it was safely secured and transported to International Bird Rescue, an organization dedicated to rescuing waterbirds,” said CHP in a social media post.
It’s not clear how the pelican was hurt.
