New grocery option comes to the Lower Ninth Ward

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — A new option for groceries is coming to the Lower Ninth Ward of New Orleans, and it’s heading there on wheels.

According to Second Harvest Food Bank, the first “Makin’ Groceries Mobile Market” for Orleans Parish will be coming to the Sanchez Multi-Service Center thanks to a grant from the NFL Foundation.

The mobile market will reportedly serve as a full-service grocery store on wheels, selling fruits, vegetables, proteins, dairy and pantry staples, with shoppers able to pay with cash, credit, debit or EBT.

The mobile markets are designed for communities with limited access to grocery stores, and they’ve already opened in nine parishes across southern Louisiana since beginning in 2021.
