FRANKFORT, Ky. (FOX 56) — The governors of Kentucky and Ohio unveiled a state-of-the-art design on Wednesday for part of the eight-mile-long Brent Spence Bridge Corridor Project in Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky.
Gov. Andy Beshear called the new companion project a game-changer, saying it would revolutionize a crucial economic corridor.
“This is a project that has been dreamed of for years and that many said would never happen,” Beshear said. “But we are getting it done by working together—and we’re doing it without tolls.”
The chosen design is a cable-stayed independent deck bridge, chosen to be lower in cost and easier to build compared to other options, according to a news release on Wednesday.
Members of the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet and the Ohio Department of Transportation looked at multiple concepts as well as an extensive technical review and wind testing.
Project leaders said the Brent Spence Bridge Corridor is among the nation’s most significant transformations, spanning eight miles of highway. Outside of the new companion bridge, the projects will also improve the existing bridge to carry local traffic, pedestrian and bike paths, and “aesthetic improvements.”
With the companion bridge type chosen, project officials said the team will continue to refine design details.
