BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — Doretha Williams, the school band director for GEO Prep Academy in Baton Rouge, is in the running to win the prestigious 2026 Music Educator Award, presented by the Recording Academy and the GRAMMY Museum.

According to a news release, Williams joined GEO Prep four years ago and has since built the school’s band program from the ground up.

If selected as one of 10 finalists, Williams will be invited to Los Angeles to be celebrated during GRAMMY Week next year. A news release said finalists each receive a $1,000 honorarium, while the overall winner is awarded a $10,000 grant. Semi-finalists will be announced in September.

“It’s about so much more than just playing an instrument,” Williams said.

Her leadership has propelled the band to award-winning status, earning first-place honors at competitions across Texas and New Orleans. Her inclusive approach welcomes students from 3rd to 12th grade, fostering a strong sense of community and confidence among young musicians.

This year, five of her seniors received music scholarships, including one student awarded over $200,000, according to a news release.
