NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — WGNO is celebrating a Founder’s Day of Caring for its parent company, Nexstar, by volunteering at Giving Hope NOLA.
Every year, Nexstar stations nationwide celebrate the day in June by giving back and volunteering as a way to say thank you to their local communities.
According to the Giving Hope website, the nonprofit organization offers food, clothing, shelter and fellowship to those in need across the area.
WGNO staff members assisted with distributing groceries to families on Monday, June 16, at Giving Hope’s Marrero location.
“It just feels really good to be giving back to the community especially during a time when there’s people in need,” Bella Dardano, WGNO digital content manager said.
Families in need drove up to get groceries from Giving Hope and WGNO volunteers on Founder’s Day.
“You know when you are hungry, it is hard to focus on anything else, so for a meal today, or a meal for tomorrow, it can make a difference,” Bill Wood, WGNO reporter said.
“We’re now being able to help those people who probably watch our channel every day. Getting to meet some of these people and really bring smiles and hope to their lives,” Chris Langley, WGNO news producer said.
Folks like Walter Bertot said these groceries help him a lot.
“They are doing a good job, and they have plenty for everyone. I’m grateful,” he said.
“WGNO definitely loves the local community, it’s what we do here everyday. We’re here to serve the community,” Dardano said.
Even if it means weathering the storm like the showers we had today.
“Everybody needs happiness in their lives and if we can bring a tiny amount to them, it makes it all worth it,” Langley said.
Our staff will once again be volunteering on Friday, June 20, for Founder’s Day at a Giving Hope location in New Orleans East.
