Staff report

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — June 14, 2025

A Bloomington man was arrested Saturday afternoon after allegedly threatening protestors with a large stick and causing panic near the intersection of Walnut Street and Kirkwood Avenue, according the Bloomington Police Department.

A 31-year-old man was taken into custody around 1:45 p.m. following a disturbance during a demonstration on the Monroe County Courthouse Square.

Multiple witnesses called police after protestors tackled the man and held him on the ground until officers arrived. Responding officers found a black Honda parked in the crosswalk and the person was restrained by several individuals nearby.

According to police, he exited his vehicle with a large stick and began striking the windows of his own car before approaching the crowd, yelling and waving the stick in a threatening manner. Witnesses said the man then returned to the area near his vehicle and attempted to retrieve an object from the ground, which one bystander believed could be a weapon. That individual then tackled the man, and others assisted in subduing him.

A separate witness told police he had tried to calm him by offering a hug, but he placed a key fob in the man’s pocket while making alarming statements. The man feared the fob might be connected to an explosive device.

The item the man appeared to be reaching for was later identified as a tactical armor carrier containing ballistic rifle plates.

The man police arrested was interviewed and then booked into the Monroe County Jail. He faces preliminary charges of intimidation, a Level 5 felony, and disorderly conduct, a Class B misdemeanor.

No injuries were reported. The investigation is ongoing.
