ATMORE, Ala. (WKRG) — Two former inmates were arrested outside Fountain Correctional Facility after they were caught trying to smuggle goods into the prison.
According to an Alabama Department of Corrections news release, ADOC K-9 officers saw a suspicious car near state property Sunday and investigated.
In the car, officers found former inmate Sherman Mickles, a juvenile girl and a baby, the release said.
Mickles was held while the K-9 unit tracked and found a second man, former inmate Robert Oliver, according to the release. Officers also found a backpack near Oliver.
Both men were arrested and taken to the Escambia County Jail. They were charged with trafficking methamphetamine, two counts of attempting to commit a controlled substance crime – distribution, first-degree possession of marijuana and prohibited activities, the release said.

The Poarch Creek and Atmore police assisted in the arrests, the release said. The investigation continues and more charges may be added.
