This gallery features photographs by Bloomingtonian Co-Publisher Toni Arcuri, taken Saturday, June 14, on Courthouse Square in Bloomington, Indiana. The images show protesters marching, holding signs, and filling the streets surrounding the Monroe County Courthouse. Also pictured are a few counter-protesters and an individual being restrained on the ground, reportedly experiencing a possible mental health crisis.
The Bloomington demonstration was part of a nationwide day of protest opposing former President Donald Trump and a military-style parade held in Washington, D.C., the same day. While exact turnout figures are difficult to confirm, organizers estimated more than 12 million people took part in demonstrations across the United States. Online critics noted that Trump’s parade drew significantly smaller crowds and drew comparisons to the staged military displays often seen in authoritarian regimes such as China and North Korea.
The D.C. parade was officially promoted as a celebration of the 250th anniversary of the United States Army, which was founded on June 14, 1775. However, the timing also coincided with Trump’s birthday, prompting criticism that the event served more as a personal display of power than a national tribute. A previous attempt by Trump to hold a military parade in 2018 was canceled amid backlash and concerns over its estimated $92 million cost.
It’s important to note that fascism has historically been described as the merger of state and corporate power. The 2025 parade was sponsored by several major corporations, particularly in the tech sector. Some of these same companies are involved in shaping military contracting, artificial intelligence, and surveillance technologies now being integrated into government functions—raising concerns about the expanding influence of private tech firms in the national security apparatus.
If there’s one enduring principle of American democracy, it is that the country was founded in defiance of monarchy.
As one protester put it: There are no kings in America—except Elvis, the King of Rock ’n’ Roll.
