Can you name the world’s oldest appliance brand?
Although they weren’t making ranges or refrigerators back then, ultra-premium appliance manufacturer Gaggenau can trace its beginnings back to the year 1683.
That’s when German nobleman Margrave Ludwig Wilhelm von Baden built a hammer and nail forge in the Black Forest town of Gaggenau. According to an account in Foodie, the operation, along with a nearby smelter plant, was intended to generate wealth for his otherwise impoverished subjects.
By the 1800s, Gaggenau ironworks had expanded into farm equipment and other mass-produced machinery for Germany’s new industrial class, and the days of hammering out nails were long gone. The company had also become a specialist in enamel, which laid the groundwork for the iconic blue coating associated with its contemporary ovens.
Indeed, Gaggenau produced its first coal and gas-fired ranges in the early 1900s, and by the 1950s produced the industry’s first built-in wall ovens, standalone cooktops and ventilation products, paving the way for custom-fitted kitchens.
More recently, Gaggenau was acquired in 2015 by BSH, makers of the luxury Bosch and Thermador appliance brands. Today the triumvirate is a favorite of designers and their elite clientele, and Gaggenau’s heritage of innovation and craftsmanship continues to inspire cooking enthusiasts worldwide.
