Paragon Casino hosts youth wellness program for over 300 local students

MARKSVILLE, La. (WNTZ) — More than 320 high school students from across Avoyelles Parish participated in a three-day health and wellness initiative hosted by Paragon Casino Resort, in collaboration with Avoyelles Sleeves Up and the Avoyelles Parish School District.

Dubbed the Field Day Program, the event aimed to empower youth and promote informed decision-making by addressing critical issues such as mental health, suicide prevention, substance abuse, cyberbullying and human trafficking. Students received free snacks, drinks and lunch each day, along with an age-appropriate film screening at the Paragon Cinema.

“This program is a testament to what we can accomplish through meaningful collaboration,” said Lonnie R. Bridges Sr., director of training and guest experience at Paragon Casino Resort. “By investing in the education and emotional well-being of our youth, we are investing in the future of Avoyelles Parish.”

Participants attended expert-led sessions and heard personal stories of recovery from HOPE Center members. Representatives from the Region VI Office of Public Health engaged students in open discussions and offered practical tools for talking about addiction with family and peers. The United States Drug Enforcement Administration also presented its One Pill Can Kill campaign, educating students on the dangers of counterfeit drugs.

“Programs like this allow us to connect with students in a way that’s both impactful and lasting,” said Marshall Ray Sampson Sr., general manager of Paragon Casino Resort. “At Paragon, we believe leadership begins with service, and we feel a responsibility to support our local youth through initiatives like this.”

The program was also supported by the Avoyelles Parish Police Jury, underscoring a community-wide effort to address the health challenges facing today’s teens and nurture the next generation of leaders.
