The American Canyon Police Department responded just after 7 p.m. to the Walmart located at 7011 Main Street on the report of a suspicious man following a mother and her child. The mother told police that an unknown man was following her from Dunkin’ to Panda Express to Walmart.
Inside Walmart, the man tossed items into her cart and the cart of another customer, the woman told officers. That’s when she alerted Walmart staff, who called 911 for assistance.
The man then took a bottle of harsh cleaning chemicals from a store shelf and sprayed a small dog belonging to another woman, ACPD said. The dog was sprayed directly in the face and across the body.
“The dog yelped in pain and showed signs of distress from the chemical exposure,” police said.
The suspect was taken into custody outside by arriving officers. After initially giving a false name, American Canyon PD said he was identified as 37-year-old Curtis Jonathan Anderson. He was booked into the Napa County Jail for cruelty to an animal.
The dog was reported to be on the mend as of Wednesday, authorities said.
