Cottonwood Heights town center project takes significant step toward development

COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS, Utah (ABC4) — Cottonwood Heights’ planned redevelopment of an old shopping center on the corner of Fort Union Boulevard and 2300 South is one step closer to taking action.

On Tuesday, city officials announced they had selected Onyx Development and Thrive Development

as their preferred partners to turn the space into a new town center for the community to gather with local dining, retail and open spaces.

“We are so excited to have the opportunity to work with Onyx/Thrive. We were so impressed with the attention to detail and enthusiasm they expressed during the bidding process and we are excited to be a partner with them in developing a project our residents will love,” said Cottonwood Heights Mayor Mike Weichers.

What to know about Cottonwood Heights’ new town center

The new community space will be built on a 10-acre lot that is currently the site of the former Hillside Plaza.

Dubbed “The Heights,” city officials said the town center will be designed and built around community features and benefits. Beatriz Mayorga, a spokesperson for Cottonwood Heights, said specific amenities of the town center are still being finalized but will include retail, dining options, green areas, as well as cultural and entertainment venues.

But it could still be a moment before Cottonwood Heights residents will be able to take advantage of the new community space.

“We are now in the process of negotiating a development agreement, including working on a detailed timeline and plans,” Mayorga told ABC4.com. “While we are still in the early stages, we anticipate taking that agreement through the approval process and starting development within the next several months.”

Mayorga said the city will provide a more updated and specific timeline as the process continues and becomes more defined.
