BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — June 6, 2025
Dressed in black and carrying signs bearing messages such as “This Is Fascism,” “White Supremacy,” and “Democracy Replaced by Autocracy,” a group affiliated with the 50501 Movement staged a silent anti-fascism protest Friday evening during Bloomington’s monthly Gallery Walk.
The “50501 Movement” is a grassroots political organization that organized protests against the second Donald Trump administration in the United States.
The group met, and followed a pre-planned route that wound through some of Bloomington’s most prominent arts and cultural spaces — including the John Waldron Arts Center, Pictura Gallery, and the iFell building — before looping back toward Walnut Street.
The demonstrators moved silently and deliberately in single-file formation. Their signs highlighted hallmark indicators of fascist regimes: suppression of labor, rampant corruption, disregard for human rights, and authoritarian nationalism. Along the route, curious onlookers watched, some engaging with the marchers in brief conversations.
“This is Fascism,” the protesters chanted.
This protest is one of several recent actions by the 50501 Movement, a grassroots group formed in response to rising authoritarianism and what it calls the erosion of democratic institutions. Their name refers to, “50 protests, 50 states, 1 movement”
