Gun Violence Awareness Month begins, City of Philadelphia highlights safety initiatives

PHILADELPHIA (WPHL) — City leaders marked the start of Gun Violence Awareness Month by highlighting safety initiatives.

Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker spoke about the Joint Warrant Apprehension Taskforce, a program that unites local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies.

Parker says the main goal of the program is to put families first and support Philadelphians to reduce gun violence.

According to city leaders, the task force has taken 287 people into police custody and recovered 87 firearms from January 2024 to May 2025.
