A Utah woman’s passion for kindness transforms lives in Downtown Salt Lake

HIGHLAND, Utah (ABC4) — Jessica Lowe went from binging cooking shows, to culinary school and ultimately feeding the homeless.  It was quite a path that brought her to what she said was meant to do help feed her friends in downtown Salt Lake City and be a little too kind.

Inside Jessica Lowe’s Kitchen she is busy making a home cooked meal for 150 or so of her closest friends.  Homeless friends in Downtown Salt Lake City.

Jessica talked to ABC4.com as she was busy cooking.  She explained, “For some of them this is really their groceries for the week.  This is all they are going to get.”

Jessica usually buys the ingredients on Tuesdays, then Wednesdays are her cooking day.  It is just Jessica and the ingredients.  Just the way she likes it.

Jessica said, “When I wake up on Wednesday I put in my AirPods, I watch my shows and I just get into the cooking.  I just love that time with me and the food and knowing where this is going and who it is for.”

This all started back in 2021.  Jessica said, “During covid there was nothing left to binge except for cooking shows.”

Those cooking shows lead Jessica to Culinary School.  She signed up for a school in Downtown Salt Lake City.  As the classes started, she realized there was going to be quite a bit of wasted food.

Jessica continued, “Every day I was walking to my car and passing all of these homies and wondering why we weren’t giving it to them because they would love it.”

So she did.  Jessica brought containers and along with her classmates, they started taking leftover food to the people who needed it.

When school ended, Jessica decided her work was not finished, “This was the reason why I felt so strongly to go to that program in the first place.  I knew that was my calling.  I couldn’t do it every single day, so i just decided to focus it on just one day a week and then make it bigger.”

Now Jessica feeds about 150 of her friends, she calls her homies, each week.  They meet at a spot in South Salt Lake.  There is a warm meal Jessica made and a sack lunch for each Homie.  The lunches are donated through Jessica’s non-profit Be a Little Too Kind.

During the weekly food delivery there is humanity, love and connection.  It is a chance for Jessica to make sure her homies know they are loved.

Jessica said, “It has made me realize that this is all what we are supposed to be doing.  Find our talents and then give them away to other people.  Share with other people and see them with our talents.”

Jessica and Be a Little Too Kind are always looking for donations to go with the Thursday meal deliveries.  You can find their information HERE.
