The arrests occurred when immigrants lacking permanent legal status showed up for court check-in appointments, Fielder said. Several children were reportedly taken into custody, including a 3-year-old. Fielder, citing the Rapid Response Network, said this group of people could be deported as soon as Thursday.
The arrests come amid ramped-up immigration enforcement across the country, a campaign promise from President Donald Trump.
“These detentions under the Trump administration are unconscionable, unlawful, and deny people their constitutional right to due process,” Fielder said.
Fielder is calling on her fellow supervisors and San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie to increase funding for immigration defense. The District 9 supervisor is also calling for the release of the 15 people arrested.
In a statement to KRON4, an ICE spokesperson said, “Those arrested had executable final orders of removal by an immigration judge and had not complied with that order.”
