Woman killed, man injured in near north side shooting

INDIANAPOLIS – A woman died and a man was seriously injured in what police suspect was a domestic-related shooting on the near north side of Indianapolis.

The gunshots prompted a large police presence in the 3700 block of N. Pennsylvania Street. Officers were dispatched just after 4 a.m. for a reported shooting.

According to Indianapolis Metropolitan police, officers arrived at an apartment to find two people suffering from gunshot wounds.

“Those arriving officers they did render aid to both of the victims until EMS arrived, and unfortunately, shortly after their arrival, the adult male was transported in stable condition but serious. And the adult female was pronounced [dead] here at the scene,” said Sgt. William Young with IMPD.

Young said several other people inside the apartment were uninjured.

“We do believe at this point that this was domestic-related,” Young said. “However, we’re still interviewing witnesses. We have not taken a suspect into custody.”

According to IMPD, the shooter left the area before police arrived.

A witness at the scene reported hearing multiple gunshots that woke her up. Other neighbors also reported hearing gunfire.

“This is somewhat more of a quieter area along Pennsylvania corridor,” Young said. “My heart goes out to this particular family. Obviously, there are some of those folks here on scene and so our chaplain’s office [has] arrived and so has out victims’ assistance unit.”

Several units responded to the scene. Young said IMPD personnel would remain in the area for “some time” to talk to witnesses and further investigate the shooting.

Anyone with information should contact IMPD at (317) 327-3475 or Crime Stoppers at (317) 262-TIPS (8477).
