A huge month for building activity has helped Sioux Falls surge ahead of recent years through May.
Permits totaled $639.7 million through the first five months of the year, up from $394.4 million for the same time last year and $482.9 million in 2023.
Large projects that were issued permits in May included much of the new Good Samaritan Founder’s Crossing mixed-use senior living development at 57th Street and Veterans Parkway at more than $109.4 million and the final piece of the Avera McKennan women and children’s expansion, which now totals more than $131 million. There also was an expansion for OLM Food Solutions, now part of Performance Food Group, at $12 million.
New commercial activity reflects those numbers at $369.4 million, compared with $208.9 million last year and $270.9 million two years ago.
Commercial additions and remodeling projects totaled $155.6 million, also ahead of $81.5 million last year and $120.6 million two years ago.
New residential construction at $82.3 million pulled ahead of last year’s $71.6 million and $53.4 million in 2023. It represents 151 new single-family homes, though, which is down from 206 last year and ahead of 123 in 2023.
Permits have been issued for 312 new multifamily units, down from 511 last year and considerably lower than 1,108 two years ago.
Residential remodeling work totaled $32.5 million, almost equal to $32.4 million for the same time last year.
“May was a great month for the yearly numbers,” said Neil King, chief building official. “Commercial additions, change in use and remodels are still going strong, trending well above than in the past few years. Residential — single family and townhomes — had a good surge in May.”
