Houston police help capture Texarkana murder suspect

TEXARKANA (KTAL/KMSS) – Texarkana police have made an arrest in connection with a murder that left one man dead and an elderly man injured.

Over the weekend, 24-year-old Benjamin Brem was taken into custody in Houston on several Texarkana arrest warrants.

The arrest was a joint effort between Houston police and Detective Casey Schmidt with the Texarkana Texas Police Department (TTPD), stemming from a Texarkana shooting that occurred early last month.

Just after midnight on May 1, 2025, TTPD responded to a shots-fired call in the 1300 block of Carroll Street. When officers got there, they found 21-year-old Benjamin Betts dead inside the home.

A 52-year-old man who was also in the house was shot and taken to Christus St. Michael, with non-life-threatening injuries.

Investigations showed that more than 50 rounds were fired into the house from the street.

Brem will be brought back to Texarkana in the next several days and booked into the Bi-State Jail for Murder, Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, and Evading Arrest.
