The first baseman’s RBI started UALR’s five-spot in the second, and the Bayou Bengals stared down a 5-1 deficit.
Unlike Sunday night though, LSU’s offense responded.
Ethan Frey and Luis Hernandez were the epicenter of the Bayou Bengals bats. Frey’s bases-clearing double in the third drew the Tigers within one run, and Hernandez tied the game in the sixth with a solo shot to left field.
The Tigers’ catcher went yard twice Monday night: two home runs, three hits, three RBI and two runs recap Hernandez’s offensive outing.
Frey finished Sunday with four hits, four RBI and two runs.
Jared Jones also finally broke through his hitting slump. In the ninth inning, the Bear hit a two-run homer to left center for his first long ball since the regular season finale at South Carolina.
The Tigers added another insurance run in the ninth for 10 runs on 11 hits.
The main hero Sunday night though was a freshman: Casan Evans.
The righty entered the game in relief effort in the second inning and had his best performance in the Purple and Gold. Evans racked up an early career-high 12 strikeouts and allowed only one hit on four runs, while throwing 109 total pitches.
Anthony Eyanson relieved Evans in the eighth for the save: finishing the game with three strikeouts in 1.2 innings of work.
The Tigers beat Little Rock 10-6 and advanced to the supers for the 17th time in program history.
LSU will host West Virginia in the Baton Rouge Super Regional this weekend.
