GRACE — A young Pocatello man drowned Saturday afternoon in a river near Grace.
The 18-year-old was swimming with friends when he jumped into the Bear River from Last Chance Flume north of Grace, according to the Caribou County Sheriff’s Office. He went under the water and did not surface.
The sheriff’s office was called shortly before 2 p.m. Deputies responded with Caribou County EMS and Caribou County Search and Rescue. The Bear Lake County Sheriff’s Office also assisted with its dive team.
The young man’s body was found at 8:20 p.m.
Last Chance Lane was closed for six hours while crews conducted search operations.
“We would like to thank the many professional responders from Caribou County, Bear Lake County, Idaho State Police and the volunteers who assisted at the scene,” the sheriff’s office wrote on Facebook. “Our condolences go out to the family and friends of the victim during this difficult time.”
