Louisiana residents urged to review insurance policies as hurricane season begins

BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — Louisiana’s insurance commissioner urges residents to prepare for hurricane season by checking their policies before a storm arrives.

Preparedness tips on the Louisiana Department of Insurance website include checking deductibles details, taking pictures or video of items in the house to make the claims process easier if needed and keeping copies of policies and agent contact information.

“I urge all policyholders to Be Insurance Ready by reviewing your policies now and discussing potential out-of-pocket costs with your agent,” Commissioner Tim Temple said. “It’s much better to know how to file a claim before your property is damaged than to try and figure out that process after the fact.

Watch out for signs of insurance and contractor fraud to avoid being scammed. Tips from the Better Business Bureau include getting repair estimates in writing and avoiding handing over a check to a contractor before work starts. Anyone who suspects fraud can report it to LDI by calling 225-342-4956.

Hurricane season is from June 1 to Nov. 30. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration officials said an “above-normal” season is expected with a forecasted range of 13 to 19 named storms.

Temple suggested that residents download the LDIConnect app to access resources.
